Mittelstand X AI: Anwenderkonferenz 2025

Practical Insights into AI Applications in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises

Press Release

Heidelberg, October 16, 2025

How small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are already using artificial intelligence (AI) in practical ways today was the focus of this year’s “Mittelstand X KI – User Conference 2025” at the Business Development Center Heidelberg. Around 60 guests from medium-sized businesses across Baden-Württemberg came together to gain insights into successful AI projects implemented by regional SMEs.

The conference was organized by the KI Lab Heidelberg, which supports companies on their journey toward AI implementation and fosters collaboration with startups.

Following the welcome address by Paul Becker, Head of KI Lab Heidelberg, five companies presented their practical AI applications – ranging from intelligent assistance systems in production and data-driven quality assurance to AI-based maintenance solutions. The showcased projects demonstrated the diverse potential of AI in the SME sector – and how strongly initiative and implementation enthusiasm are growing within these companies.

Innovations from Practice
The conference opened with Adrian Dexheimer from Mann und Schröder GmbH, who demonstrated how AI is used in cosmetics production to optimize formulations and improve process efficiency. Adrian Morlock from Menzerna Polishing Compounds GmbH followed with insights into AI-based process optimization in polishing compound manufacturing.

Fresh perspectives from electrical engineering were shared by Ralf Kremser of W. Gessmann GmbH, followed by Knut Haberkant from HIMA Paul Hildebrandt GmbH, who presented AI-supported safety solutions. The final company presentation came from Matthias Dziubany of BITO Lagertechnik Bittmann GmbH, offering a hands-on look at digital warehouse logistics powered by AI.

A highlight of the event was the keynote by Dr. Boris Buchtala (Robert Bosch GmbH) on “Impact-Driven Startup Collaboration in R&D.” He illustrated how large industrial companies and startups can drive sustainable innovation through joint development projects.

Heidelberg as a Hub for AI Applications
With this user conference, the KI Lab Heidelberg reinforces its role as a central contact point for practical AI projects in the SME sector. Thanks to its strong research landscape and growing technology community, Heidelberg has evolved into a hotspot for AI innovation in Baden-Württemberg.

The evening concluded with dinner and drinks in a relaxed atmosphere – accompanied by lively discussions about upcoming AI projects, collaboration opportunities, and shared visions for the digital future of the SME sector.
